XML Documents for Humanists: An Introduction
Creating XML documents allows humanists to organize, analyze, and web-publish their textual (and other) materials. The current one and a half day workshop allows hands-on practice in analyzing the document structure of literary and linguistic examples, creating XML versions of these documents, and transforming these versions to web-publishable versions. It covers document structure, in cluding simple metadata creation and data annotation, and also serves as an introduction to the usefuleness of XML and its tools. Why XML? What different aspects do we look for to mark up in a poem vs. in linguistic text? How would we annotate this, and what guidelines exist? The workshop includes plenty of hands-on practice in document creation, document annotation. Sample texts will be provided, and participants are also welcome to bring short texts in any language themselves (preferably in plain text format).
No previous knowledge of XML is expected. Before the workshop, participants should download and install the free 30-day trial version of oXygen, available here: http://www.oxygenxml.com/download_oxygenxml_editor.html
Workshop instructor: Jeff Rydberg-Cox, Ph.D. (Professor, University of Missouri-Kansas City Department of English, Director of Classical and Ancient Studies Program and of the Liberal Studies Program, and Affiliated Faculty, Department of Computer Science, UMKC).
